In a world grappling with environmental challenges, the transition to sustainable transportation has become a paramount concern. One area that holds significant promise is the electrification of school buses. These iconic yellow vehicles, ferrying children to and from school, have the potential to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and provide a safer and quieter ride. In this blog post, we'll delve into the recent NJ Clean Cities events held on June 13th and June 21st, which highlighted the importance of electrifying school buses and provided invaluable insights into the programs and funding available to support this transformative endeavor.
The NJ Clean Cities and our fellow co-hosts, the New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club, brought together school districts, contractors, industry experts, government representatives, and environmental advocates eager to explore the benefits and opportunities surrounding school bus electrification. The June 13th event was hosted by the Atlantic County Utility Authority, and the June 21st event was hosted by the Hudson County Improvement Authority. We appreciate both stakeholders for their insightful perspectives and graciousness in hosting these meetings.
The events featured an impressive lineup of speakers who shared their expertise on various aspects of school bus electrification, including the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) local utilities, EV charging consultants, the Sierra Club and NJ Clean Cities. The presentations shared with the group, along with photos from the event are included in the pages linked above.
The EPA presentation emphasized the environmental advantages of transitioning to electric school buses and showcased the agency’s commitment to supporting a sustainable future. We gleaned important information on the number of buses required per application, as well as the importance of identifying resources for funding. Collaboration between stakeholders will prove instrumental in meeting the required application metrics. State and utility funding can be stacked with EPA funding, and make an application more attractive.
Special thanks to the organizations and owners who brought the buses, trucks, cars and eBikes which served as a centerpiece of interaction for the attendees. The buses showcased the tremendous potential for improving the lives of New Jersey's school districts and children.
Funding Opportunities
The EPA Clean School Bus Program is now open and presents an excellent opportunity for schools to replace diesel-powered buses with electric and alternative fuel options. This program aims to enhance air quality, reduce emissions, and provide safer transportation for students. By participating, schools can access funding to cover the costs of purchasing new buses and necessary infrastructure. The benefits of transitioning to electric or alternative fuel buses include lower maintenance expenses, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and quieter operation. Learn more about the funding opportunities, eligibility criteria, and the application process here. The deadline for applications is August 22nd.
Additionally, the NJ Board of Public Utilities has recently announced the opening of the next application window for the State's Charge Up New Jersey program. This program offers three distinct incentive programs designed to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and expand the charging infrastructure across the state. The incentive program include a Clean Fleet category, which encourages the transition to electric vehicles in public and private fleets. By participating in Charge Up New Jersey, stakeholders can access funding and support to facilitate the widespread adoption of EVs and the development of robust charging infrastructure throughout the state.
