Welcome to our coalition’s brand-new website, where you’ll find various new features that allow us to connect with you better than ever before. One of these features is our NJCCC community blog where we will be sharing information and updates about NJCCC’s projects, programs, events and initiatives! We encourage coalition members to utilize this blog to spread awareness about their organization’s sustainable transportation initiatives as well as learn about what other members are doing to promote clean fuels and vehicles.

While the fight against climate change consists of many different industries and fields working together, we must recognize the significance of the transportation sector with regard to emissions. In fact, the most recent New Jersey Greenhouse Gas Inventory report estimates that approximately 40% of the state’s emissions come from the transportation sector. This makes the NJCCC and its members’ work essential to keeping the Garden State green. Complementing this work are efforts by the state government to reduce vehicle emissions. These efforts include the adoption of Advanced Clean Truck and Fleet Reporting rules, which encourage vehicle manufacturers to sell more clean vehicles, and a $6 million funding program that helps offset costs for underserved communities to transition to clean electric fleets. Additionally, the 2020 - 2022 Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) Strategic Funding Plan, which allocates 75% of its funding toward its goal of “clean and equitable transportation.” The plan’s projects include investment in idle reduction technologies and local electrification initiatives.

New Jersey has already seen results in reducing vehicle emissions. A recent report by the American Lung Association found that New Jersey successfully reduced its particle pollution, which can be caused by vehicle exhaust, since 2020. Areas like Camden County improved from a C grade in particle air quality the previous year to an A grade this year. Additionally, the state saw a 56% increase in electric vehicle registrations and an 88.4% increase in electric vehicle sales since 2020. As of this past December, there are 64,307 electric vehicles registered in New Jersey. While that number is significant, note that it is only approximately 20% of Governor Phil Murphy’s goal of at least 330,000 electric vehicles registered in New Jersey by 2025.

On the ground, the NJCCC has witnessed the latest in clean fuel technology. On May 9th, our Coordinator Chuck Feinberg and Program Manager Caroline McCallum were invited to attend a Toyota demonstration event featuring their new hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty truck and Mirai fuel cell sedan. At the event, they were able to check out both vehicles and talk to Toyota representatives about their operation and growth opportunities for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in New Jersey.

All in all, the NJCCC continues to stand at the forefront of clean transportation in New Jersey.   The NJCCC is the only statewide entity in New Jersey whose portfolio includes, but is not limited to, activities which promote education, policy development, and market strengthening initiatives for alternative fuels and advanced vehicles, fuel economy, and idle reduction.  We are confident that our collective efforts will bring forward a more sustainable future.
