Understanding NJ's Clean Fuel Standard: A New Era of Sustainable Transportation

New Jersey Natural Gas's transition to Neste's MY renewable diesel is expected to slash annual GHG emissions by 550 tons, positioning both organizations as a trailblazer in the region. Carrie Song, Global Senior Vice President at Neste, articulates the broader influence of this movement: “This partnership demonstrates the increasing demand for lower-emission fuels across the entire nation.” The transition, supported by renewable diesel's compatibility with existing engines, marks a substantial stride in meeting the state's emission reduction objectives.

Specifically, Neste’s MY Renewable Diesel reduces GHG emissions by as much as 75-95%. This fuel's effectiveness is especially notable in heavy-duty engines where it serves as a direct substitute for conventional diesel without the need for any engine or system modifications. This remarkable reduction is made possible by the unique chemical composition of renewable diesel, which, although similar to fossil diesel, is derived from sustainable sources like vegetable oils or animal fats. Through a process called hydrotreating, these oils are stripped of impurities, resulting in a fuel that not only mimics but improves upon characteristics of traditional diesel, such as energy density, allowing trucks to travel further on the same amount of fuel. Consequently, renewable diesel stands as a superior alternative that substantially lowers emissions, aiding New Jersey’s efforts to enhance air quality and reduce greenhouse gas contributions effectively.
